This study aims to get the factual data of teachers’ strategies in teaching descriptive text to seventh-grade students at SMPN 263 Jakarta. Besides, this research is intended to know the teachers’ strategies used and how to implement those strategies in teaching descriptive writing. To be noticed, Descriptive text is a is text describing the characteristics of an object or something. Its purpose is to describe and explain a specific person, place, or thing.
In this research, the writer used the descriptive qualitative method by using interviews, observation, field notes, and documentation as the main instruments. This research was involved three English teachers as a participant. The data was collected and analysed by using narrative technique.
The results showed that (1) There are three strategies applied for teaching descriptive writing: genre-based learning, discovery learning, and task-based learning. (2) The teacher applied three stages in teaching descriptive text: pre-task, main-task, and post-task. (3) There are problems in teaching descriptive writing: students’ lack of understanding and students’ motivation.
