The objective of this is to find out the students’ critical thinking levels in writing argumentative essay. It focuses on students’ critical thinking for the fifth semester students of 5B essay writing class in the academic year 2016-2017. There were 18 students’ essay were analysed to set the critical thinking of them. To support the data, five students were interviewed using open-ended question by which the writer can obtain more information about the students critical thinking.
In this research, the writer used a non field survey integrated with the analytical qualitative research. The writer described the result of the students' argumentative essay, and the result of students’ interview. In collecting the data, the writer used structured interview. The analysis technique used in this research is students' critical thinking level rubric by Linda.
Based on the result of this research, there one student that categorised into unreflective thinker level, nine students are challenge thinker level, six students are in beginning thinker level, one student is practical thinker level, and one student has the advanced thinker level. Thus, it can be concluded that most of students in essay writing class 5B have low critical thinking level. it means that they are not able to develop their ideas.
