The objectives of the research were to know whether or not the English
summative test items for the ninth grade students of SMP PGRI 9 Jakarta in the first
semester of the 2017/2018 Academic Year had been well-constructed and to
identify which ones of the test items were accepted, revised or rejected. The
methods used in the research were quantitative descriptive statistics and qualitative
analysis method. Quantitative descriptive statistics were used to obtain facility
value, discriminating power, and the effectiveness of distracters. Meanwhile,
qualitative analysis were used to detect and describe the cause of the weak item for
making the revision. The population respondent of the research was the ninth grade
deals with six classes (201 students). The sample was selected by using purposive
sampling. Then, the writer took 2 classes as the sample of respondents which
consisted of 67 students. The instrument used in this research was the English
summative test, the students’ answer sheets, and the answer key.
The results of the research based on difficulty level or facility value found
that the test consisted of 24% easy items, 50% medium items, and 25% difficult
items. It could be said, that the English summative test did not fulfil the criteria of
a good test proportion. Meanwhile, based on the discriminating power found that
out of 50 items, 32 items (64%) were accepted, 16 items (32%) were revised, and 2
items were (4%) rejected. Based on the data, the English Summative test had
classification of the effectiveness of answer keys and distracters were effective,
which had the highest portion with 76% and 63.33%.
Based on the results, the writer concluded that the English summative test
which was administered at SMP PGRI 9 Jakarta did not meet the quality of a good
test. In other words, the item could not be used for the test in the future. The benefit of the research was able to help the English teacher to identify the category of each item, which ones of the test item was accepted, revised, or rejected. Therefore, the teacher could make the test which construct of qualified items for the future.
