An item analysis on the English summative test for the second semester of the eighth grade students at MTs Nurul Falah Batujaya, Karawang, West Java on the 2016/2017 academic year

The aim of this study was to find out whether the items of English summative test for the eighth grade students of the second semester at MTs. Nurul Falah Batujaya, Karawang in the 2016/2017 Academic Year had good quality or not. In finding out the quality of the items, the writer has conducted a quantitative analysis and descriptive qualitative method.
The results of data analysis showed that there have been 20 difficult items (represent 52% of the test), 18 medium items (represent 48% of the test) and 0 easy items (represent 0% of the test). The discriminating power showed that there have been 16 maintained or accepted items (represent 42% of the test), 13 items should be revised (represent 34% of the test) and the rest 9 items were discarded (represent 24% of the test). The results of data analysis on the distracters of the weak items in discriminating power showed that there have been 36 effective distracters (represent 92% of the weak items) and the rest 3 ineffective distracters (represent 8% of the weak items).The test items had both low level in facility value and discriminating power but good in the effectiveness of the distracter. However, most of the results of data analysis showed that the test had low level, and there should be a correction to the revised items.
Based on the description above that from 40 items the writer found only 16 items (42%) categorized accepted. It can be concluded that the English summative test for the second semester of eighth grade students at MTs. Nurul Falah Batujaya, Karawang, West Java on the 2016/2017 Academic Year had low quality.
