An Error Analysis of Descriptive Writing of the Eleventh Grade Students of SMAN 9 Bekasi in the 2017/2018 Academic Year

This research washeld at SMAN 9 Bekasi. The objective of the study is to find the empirical evidence of the most commonty pesand sources of error that the eleventh grade students of SMAN 9 Bekasi made in their descriptive writing in the 2017/2018 academic year. The samples of this study were 38 students of XI IPA 4 class.
The writer used error analysis and descriptive analysis as methods of research. He found that the top three typical errors that the students made were capitalization with 152 or 18.2% errors, punctuation with 124 or 14.9% errors, andsingular-plural with 97 or 11.6% errors. The down three typical errors that the students made were word order and verb with 19 or 2.2% errors, meaning not clear with 11 or 1.3% errors, and incompletes entence with 10 or 1.2% errors.
Meanwhile, the highest source of the students’ error was in trilingual errors with 741 or 89.1% errors and the lowest source of the students’ error was inter language errors with 91 or 10.9% errors.
It can be concluded that the teacher needs to give more explanation about the terms of capitalization, punctuation, and singular-plural to the students. It is proven that the top three type so ferrorare capitalization, punctuation, and singular-plural. Moreover, the benefits of there search result are to give the information about the types and sources of error that the eleventh grade students of SMAN 9 Bekasi made and to give appropriate remedial teaching in order to reduce the students’ errors in capitalization, punctuation, and singular-plural.
