tertinggi (88.85%). Meskipun U-Net standar menunjukkan Recall tertinggi (90.88%),

ABSTRACT
Oil spills pose a serious threat to marine and coastal environments, causing significant
environmental, economic, and social impacts. The increasing frequency of oil spill
accidents in recent years, driven by the growth of maritime transportation and large-scale
oil exploitation, necessitates early detection to minimize damage and enable a rapid
response. The use of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery from satellites offers a
distinct advantage due to its ability to cover large areas regardless of time and weather
conditions, unlike optical and infrared sensors. This advantage makes SAR imagery ideal
for analysis using modern methods like Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) for
automatic oil spill detection. However, applying CNNs to SAR imagery faces a primary
challenge: the difficulty in accurately detecting oil spills. This research aims to implement
and evaluate an automatic oil spill detection system using Sentinel-1 SAR imagery by
comparing three U-Net-based CNN architectures: the standard U-Net, Attention U-Net,
and ResUnet. Satellite imagery data were obtained from the Copernicus Browser and
incident reports from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). Data pre-
processing was performed using the SNAP application, which included radiometric
calibration, speckle filtering, and terrain correction. The dataset, consisting of 600 images,
was then divided into training (75%), validation (12.5%), and test (12.5%) sets to train and
evaluate the models. The evaluation results show that ResUnet had the most superior
overall performance. This model achieved the highest accuracy (99.39%), highest precision
(92.06%), highest Mean IoU (79.94%), and highest Dice Score (88.85%). Although the
standard U-Net exhibited the highest Recall (90.88%), indicating superior detection
sensitivity, ResUnet's significantly higher precision demonstrates its ability to substantially
minimize false positives. The capability of residual blocks within ResUnet to learn more
complex and deeper features proved to be the most effective and reliable architectural
design for distinguishing oil spills from look-alike objects in complex SAR imagery.
