Voice In The Classroom: Exploring The Dynamics Of Teacher Talk, Students’ Motivation And Their Learning Engagement

This study investigates the pivotal role of teacher talk in influencing students’ motivation and engagement in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. Amid increasing emphasis on learner-centered education, the research aims to explore how various types of teacher communication strategies—such as feedback, questioning, tone, and motivational language—shape student behavior and emotional investment during English lessons. Conducted in the context of Al Bayan secondary high schools in Sukabumi, this research is motivated by the need to understand how teacher-student interaction impacts cognitive, emotional, and behavioral engagement, particularly in boarding school grounded educational environments.
Employing a qualitative case study design, the research involved six English teachers and students aged 15 to 17 years across three school branches—Cibadak, Selabintana, and Goalpara. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured focus group discussions (FGDs) to capture both real-time interactional patterns and students’ reflective perceptions. The instruments included structured observation protocols and open-ended interview guides focused on tone, clarity, feedback, and engagement. The data were analyzed thematically to identify recurring patterns and themes, ensuring triangulation between observation and interview findings for enhanced validity and reliability.
The findings reveal that teacher talk is not merely a mode of instruction but a powerful tool that affects learners' motivation, emotional climate, and classroom participation. Motivational language, humor, empathy, and dialogic questioning emerged as key strategies that fostered student confidence and engagement. Conversely, overly rigid or unclear communication led to disengagement. Five dominant themes emerged: motivational expression, emotional rapport, instructional clarity, cognitive scaffolding, and student voice preferences. These findings support the conclusion that adaptive, culturally responsive, and student-centered teacher talk is crucial for creating supportive and engaging EFL learning environments
