EFL Teachers’ Strategies In Teaching Listening And Speaking At Secondary Schools In Bogor

Teaching strategy is the combination of used to organize the classroom. Teaching listening and speaking are not easy to do by the EFL teachers. Several EFL teachers’ have different ways in teaching both skills in the classroom. To solve this barrier, teachers carry a big responsibility in their classrooms. EFL Teachers need to encourage students’ participation through preparing an interesting strategy during listening and speaking instruction in order to attract students’ attention to take part actively in listening and speaking class. This study attempted to investigate the strategy used by EFL teachers in teaching listening and speaking skills at the secondary level. Listening strategy includes bottom-up, top-down, interactive processing and metacognitive strategy were applied. Meanwhile, roleplay, interview, storytelling, question and answer, repetition, and group presentation in teaching speaking skills. Through utilizing qualitative descriptive analysis, this study involved 10 EFL teachers at the secondary level in Bogor where they were observed and interviewed. The analysis of data revealed that teachers used mostly Bottom-up strategies with 77,0% in teaching listening, while Roleplay is the most favorite strategies which used by EFL teachers in teaching speaking skills.
