The Effect of Using English Songs for Student’s Speaking Skill: Students’ Perception

This study aims to identify and analyze students' perceptions of the use of
English songs to improve speaking ability in the ninth grade of junior high school.
At the English learning stage in junior high school, students often experience
difficulties in developing their speaking ability. This problem can be caused by
various factors, including the lack of using interesting and interactive learning
methods. In addition, students' lack of motivation and interest in English
learning can alsobe an obstacle. Researchers use mixed methods, there are two
combined approaches, namely qualitative and quantitative. This research was
conducted at Junior High School 3 Depok with 122 students taught English song
as participants. The participants were selected from the fifth class of the ninthgrade.
It consists of the 18 items of close-ended questionnaire and 4 items of
open-ended questionnaire in the form of links in Google Forms and share using
Whatsapp. Most students (61%) stated that they use English songs as an effective
means in the development of their speaking skills. The results showed that most
students (51.5%) felt more confident when using songs, felt easy to memorize,
and could understand the context of proper use of English in everyday
conversation. Most students(41.4%) could better understand the meaning of words
and phrases in context through the use of English songs. Although many students
feel confident and better understand the meaning of lyrics, (12.3%) of students
who experience a lack of confidence when practicing speaking English using
songs. Some of them (13.1%) expressed difficulty in adjusting to the rhythm of
the song, while others found it difficult to interpret the meaning of the song
precisely into the context of the conversation.
