This research was designed to explore the difficulties experienced by EFL students
in speaking English in an Islamic Senior High School environment. The study used
a mixed-method approach to identify the frequency of the students' obstacles in
speaking. It was conducted in an Islamic Senior High School in Jakarta and
involved 111 students as voluntary respondents. The instrument used in this study
was adapted from (Gan, 2013) consisted of 20-item questionnaire and 6 interview
questions. A sequential explanation was used to find the students' speaking
challenges, encompassing five specific indicators. The result shows that the major
challenges faced were Speech Processing Difficulties (71%), followed by Linguistic
Obstacles (66%), Access to Speaking Opportunities (66%), Academic and
Conversational English Skills (64%), and Negative Affects (64%). According to the
results, this study recommends that teachers apply interactive speaking methods in
the learning process to help students experience and practice speaking in English
and offer constructive feedback to enhance their speaking abilities.
