This study aims to find out what factors of anxiety in speaking English experienced by eighth-grade students at SMPN 251 Jakarta. The research method used is qualitative methods. The informants of this research were 18 students who were taken using purposive sampling. In collecting the data, researchers used observation checklists and semi-structured interviews, where students performed in front of the class to speak English. Researchers conducted interviews using Indonesian to avoid misunderstandings. After collecting data from observations and interviews, researchers categorized and described the data based on the indicators.
From the result of this research, researchers found factors contributing to students' anxiety in speaking English at SMPN 251 Jakarta: communication apprehension, students had low self-confidence; misinterpretation between speaker and audience; overwhelmed by the rules; and excessive fear; test anxiety, fear during the examination; fear of failing the examination; lack of preparation; fear of negative evaluation, afraid of making mistakes that could be evaluated by others; fear about being laughed at and teased by peers; and fear about being corrected by their teacher.
