Dr. Hamka, 2018. This study aims to find out how EFL students use Informal
Digital learning to learn English speaking in the higher education context in
Indonesia. The researcher used mixed method research with descriptive analysis
of quantitative and in-depth understanding through qualitative with convenience
sampling. Quantitative data collection is modified from the research of Uztosun
(2017) and Lee; Nur et al. (2019). The reliability test using the Excel formula
obtained 0.93, which means the instrument is reliable. Qualitative data is based on
five questions that support quantitative data.
This research brings up the issue of how the influences of Informal Digital
Learning of English (IDLE) in speaking on self-regulated motivation (SRM). One
hundred and fifty-two students participated in obtaining quantitative data, and five
students contributed to semi-structured interview sessions. The results showed
that IDLE speaking exercises affected their motivation and confidence and
improved communication. The study also revealed that their language learning
through IDLE speaking exercises extended the social reach of the community on
online platforms.
