Social Media Usage for Informal Digital Learning of English: A Survey in A Junior High School in Jakarta, Indonesia

This survey aimed to determine the use of social media in Informal Digital English learning (IDLE) among Junior High School students. It focused on what social media they use to learn and whether the social media impact on their English skills improvement. This study was conducted in a Junior High School in Jakarta involving 301 students as voluntary participants. The instrument used was adapted from (Muftah, 2022) consisting of eleven (11) questions. Descriptive analysis was conducted to find out what social media that the Junior High School students use for learning English and whether the social media affects their English language skills. The results show that the three favourite social media used by students are Whatsapp (96,7%), Instagram (85,4%), and Youtube (84,7%). They made use of them with various activities, especially for learning English. In addition, this study shows that social media use has an impact on their English language skills. With the results shown, this study suggests using social media more optimally to help students improve their English language skills. How social media can be used as learning tools for teachers in learning English at school has also been discussed.
