The objective of this study is to find out whether or not there is a relationship between self-confidence and speaking ability of the eighth grade students at SMPN 5 Tigaraksa in 2020/2021 academic year.
The method of this study is a quantitative method of a correlation approach by analyzing the relationship between self-confidence and speaking ability. The data were collected by calculating the questionnaire of self- confidence and the score of speaking ability. The sample of this study were the students of 8A class of SMPN 5 Tigaraksa. There were 35 student, who have studied at 8A class of SMPN 5 Tigaraksa. To measure the correlation between self-confidence and speaking ability, the writer used Pearson’s Product Moment correlation.
Based on the calculation and the correlation analysis, it was found that robserved is 0.350 and rtable is 0.325 in the level significance. The result is ro>rt, it means that robserved was higher than rtable. From the significant test, it was also found tobserved > ttable = 2.28 > 1.69, so the null hypotheses (HO) was rejected and the alternative hypotheses (Hi) was accepted. It could be concluded that there was a significant relationship between self-confidence (X Variable) and speaking ability (Y Variable).
From the findings of the research, the writer concluded that there was a relationship between self-confidence and speaking ability of the eighth grade students at SMPN 5 Tigaraksa in 2021/2022 academic year.
