The aim of this study is to find out whether or not there is a relationship between students’
anxiety level and their fluency in speaking English at the tenth-grade students of SMA
Muhammadiyah 14 Jakarta on the second semester in the 2018/2019 academic year.
The method applied in this study was a quantitative method of a correlational approach to
analyze the relationship between students’ level of anxiety and their speaking fluency. The data
were collected in a form of anxiety questionnaire and a speaking interview test. The sample of this
study were the students of SMA Muhammadiyah 14 Jakarta. The results showed that out of 40
students, 14 of them have minimal anxiety, 19 students have mild anxiety, 5 students have
moderate anxiety and 2 students have severe anxiety. The result of the Pearson’s Product Moment
correlation calculation found that ro < rt (ro=0.084, rt=0.312, df=38, p=0.05), meanwhile the
significance test also shows that to < tt (to=0.052, tt=1.685, df=38, p=0.95). From the result of the
Pearson’s Product Moment calculation above, it is found that there was no significant relationship
between students’ level of anxiety and their fluency in speaking English.
From the findings of the research, the writer has concluded that there is no relationship between students’ level of anxiety and their fluency in speaking English of the tenth-grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 14 Jakarta in the second semester of the 2018/2019 academic year.
