The Factors and Types of EFL Students’ Speaking Anxiety in Junior High School

The study was conducted to find out students’ level, factors and types of speaking anxiety are experienced by class VII students’ of SMP Negeri 257 Jakarta. Speaking anxiety is a component of the anxiety and fear that language learners experience when compelled to speak in front of a crowd. Sometimes, anxiety visualized as something that can have a big impact on one's confidence in academic contexts and the results of learners who frequently fail when they are unable to speak out to express what they know. Therefore, researchers are serious about analyzed this problem.
Researchers used descriptive research in the form of a qualitative approach in the form of case studies. The subject who became a target in the study was a class VII C students’ of SMP Negeri 257 Jakarta, who focused on the student who had taken speaking anxiety. Researchers used 36 respondents who have responded to the FLCAS (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale) questionnaire and 10 respondents who have responded to the Interview. It consists of the 33 items of close-ended questionnaire, also 8 items of interviews in the form links through Google Forms and through phone calls shared through whatsapp media. The results of research regarding anxiety experienced in class VII students of SMPN 257 Jakarta, will be shown in the following explanation. Based on the results from the analyzed data of FLCAS questionnaire, it was found that the level of anxiety felt by students when speaking English dominated by very anxious feelings level of anxiety, more over based on the analyzed the questionnaires shows that there are three factors triggering anxiety in students however one of the other 3 factors that has the highest percentage factor, namely the Test Anxiety factor. The last data obtained from the analysis of interviews with 10 participants in class VII C students of SMPN 257 Jakarta showed the results in the form of the dominating type of anxiety experienced, student’s anxiety type is dominated by State Anxiety.
