The Perspective of 7th Graders at 166 Jakarta Junior High School on Audiobooks

This paper aimed to find out whether it was true that audiobooks can improve students’ 7th graders from SMP Negeri 166 Jakarta English speaking skills without partners by listening to audiobooks during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021/2022. The research method used a qualitative case study model. The sample used was purposive sampling. There were 4 samples in the study, one male and three female. The study used interviews, focus group discussions, and field notes as instruments.
The results of the study show that there were many benefits of using audiobooks, one of which was developing English speaking skills for 7th-grade students of SMPN 166. They were able to make English sentences that are various than before, pronunciation was more fluent and accurate, and able to use correct word structures.
The conclusion was that audiobooks can increase vocabulary, students can learn to pronounce words through native speakers through audiobooks and imitate them, and learn intonation to tell stories to others. Based on the instruments used during the paper and the results taken from observations of the students, the audiobook was practical, valuable, and successful for students who want to learn a foreign language, in the author's case, English speaking skills.
