The objective of the study was to find out the washback effect of English online test for ninth grade students’ at SMP 20 Jakarta has washback either positive or negative impact. This research was administrated at SMP 20 Jakarta for the ninth grade students’ on first semester of the 2020/2021 academic year. Washback analysis in this study focuses on students’ preparation when facing the English online test, students’ feeling and perception. For practical purpose, the writer analyzed by using criteria washback either positive and negative. This research used qualitative analysis as the method. Qualitative analysis is used by researcher to get a full and in depth understanding of a picture phenomenon occurs and how it occurs. The participants of this research were the students of 2 classes. It is consist of 71 students. The participants are asked to fill out an open questionnaire and close questionnaire. This research shows that the English online test for ninth grade discover the criteria of positive and negative washback effect. From that information, it was concluded the English online test which was administrated in SMP 20 Jakarta can be categorized as a positive and negative washback.
