The objectives of the research were to know whether or not the English
summative test items for the ninth grade students of SMPN 276 Jakarta in the
Second semester of the 2017/2018 Academic Year had been well-constructed and
to identify which ones of the test items were accepted, revised or rejected. The
methods used in the research were quantitative descriptive statistics and
qualitative analysis method. Quantitative descriptive statistics were used to obtain
facility value, discriminating power, and the effectiveness of distracters.
Meanwhile, qualitative analysis was used to detect and describe the cause of the
weak item for making the revision. The population respondent of the research was
the ninth grade deals with five classes (179 students). The sample was selected by
using random cluster sampling technique. Then, the writer took 2 classes as the
sample of respondents which consisted of 71 students. The instrument used in this
research was the English summative test, the students’ answer sheets, and the
answer key.
Based on the difficulty level or facility value, the writer found that was 12
item (24%) categorized as difficult items. Next there were 26 items (52%)
categorized as medium items. Finally, there were 11 items (24%) categorized as
easy items. It means obvious that the English summative test did not have good
proportion. Based on the discriminating power, there were 3 items (6%)
categorized as excellent items, 12 items (24%) categorized as good items, 17 items
(34%) categorized as satisfactory items, 16 items (32%) categorized as poor items,
and 2 items (4%) categorized as rejected items. Based on the effectiveness of
distracters, there were 95 distracters (63.33%) categorized as effective. It means
that the effectiveness of distracters in the English summative test was good
because the portion of the effective distracters was higher than the ineffective
distracters.
The writer concluded that the English summative test items for the ninth
grade students of SMPN 276 Jakarta in the second semester of the 2017/2018
academic year did not meet the qualification of a good test. In other words, this test could not be used for testing in the future.
