This study aims to find out the empirical evidence of whether or not there is a significant relationship between students’ reading motivation and their reading comprehension for the ninth grade students in SMPN 1 Karang Bahagia in the academic year of 2021/2022.
The writer applied the quantitative method by using the correlation technique. The population of this study was the ninth grade students in SMPN 1 Karang Bahagia and the writer took 2 classes (9.1 & 9.3 class) consisting of 70 students as study samples. In this study, the writer determined two kinds of instruments. The instruments were the questionnaire of reading motivation (X) and the reading test (Y). The numerical data of the two variables were calculated by using the Pearson Product Moment formula.
The results of statistical analysis and calculations determine that the null hypothesis (Ho) is accepted and the alternative hypothesis (Hi) is rejected. It can be seen from the result of the obtained rxy = 0.17 is smaller than rt with significance level 0.05 = 0.244 (0.17 < 0.244) and the obtained zα = 1.416 is smaller than the zt
= 1.980 (1.416 < 1.980). Thus, it can be concluded that there is no significant relationship between students' reading motivation and reading comprehension for the ninth grade students of SMPN 1 Karang Bahagia for the academic year 2021/2022.
