The Relationship between Students Reading Habits and Their Abilities in Writing A Narrative Text of The Tenth-Grade Students of SMAN 51 Jakarta

The writer shows that the objective of this research is to determine reading
habits have a relationship and their abilities in a narrative text of the tenth-grade
students' of SMAN 51 Jakarta. The study took population was students of tenthgrade
SMAN 51 Jakarta. This study used the correlation method. There are two
instruments used in data collection. The first instrument to measure students'
reading habits, using a questionnaire, was given to students. The second instrument
measures students' narrative writing ability by giving students a test to write
narrative texts. The collected data is then calculated using the Pearson Product
Moment Correlation and t-test sig. 5%.
The writer got the results of the Pearson Product Moment correlation
obtained a value of 0.600, higher than the value of the r-table 0.361 (𝑟𝑥𝑦= 0.600 >
0.361). Besides that, based on the t-test calculation, a value of t = 6.40 higher from
the value of t table that is t = 6.40 > 1.70, which means Ho is rejected, and Ha is
accepted. Finally, 36% of their reading habits influence students’ narrative writing
abilities and 64% by other factors. Other factors are that they still have difficulty
thinking critically in expressing ideas, lack knowledge of grammar, little
vocabulary, lack pay attention to punctuation, and still find it difficult to make
coherent sentences. Thus, the writer can conclude there is a significant correlation
between students’ reading habits and their abilities in writing a narrative text of the tenth-grade students of SMAN 51 Jakarta.
