The Students Perception of The Use of Online Learning in Reading Comprehension

This research is aimed to investigate the students’ perception of the use of online learning during Covid-19 pandemic to reading comprehension of English Education Department, University Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. Hamka. The researcher conducted a quantitative, using a survey design method. This sample of this study was 75 students of the English Education Department and consists of 34 students of 6th semester and 41 students of 8th semester. The data collection of this study consists of 28 statements. The instrument of this study was an online questionnaire using five-Likert scale type. The result of this research taken from the whole data, showed the highest score with average 3.96 with the statement the one of advantages of online learning is the use of clear screen tools, the result is similar to Coman (2020) that the students belief e-learning tools was useful and easy to use. The result of students’ perception of reading comprehension showed in this research with average 3.89 stated with the statement students can determine the answer when reading a text indicated that the respondents in this research have a good comprehension skill in reading, unfortunately the researcher do not find any previous research that show the same line with this statement. The last result from this research, with statement students feel tired of reading a lot of sentences on a bright screen, on average 4.33 also have the same line with Untari (2020) that when the students read online due to the light of the screen it makes students’ eyes work harder than usual. This result also similar with Milliner & Cote (2015) as cited in Ni’mah & Umamah, (2020) which stated a long term reading on electronic screens can be tiring and disturbing. As a result of the study, the researcher concluded that the benefits of online learning have had a substantial effect on the knowledge of learners’ comprehension, and that students have strongly focused on the material of reading subject they read.
