An Item Analysis of the English Summative Test for the Second-Year Students of SMPN 103 Jakarta in the Second Semester of the 2018/2019 Academic Year

The objective of this research is to find empirical evidence of whether or not the English summative test for the second-year students of SMPN 103 Jakarta in the second semester of she 2018/2019 academic year has fulfilled the criteria of a good quality test. The methods of the research were quantitative and qualitative. The quantitative was used to analyze the facility value, discriminating power and effectiveness of distractors and present the results of the analysis descriptively. Meanwhile, the qualitative analysis was used to detect and describe the cause of the weak item for making the revision. The population of the research was all of the second-year students’ answer sheets of SMPN 103 Jakarta. The samples of this research were the 71 second-year students’ answer sheets of class II-1 and II-2. Those two second-year students’ answer sheets were the representative of all the second-year students’ answer sheets which were taught by the writers’ mentor teacher in the teaching practice program. This summative test consisted of 28 (56%) very easy items, 13 (26%) easy items, 3 (6%) moderate items, 3 (6%) difficult items and 3 (6%) very difficult items. There are 21 (42%) of the items are acceptable or maintained, 26 (52%) of the items need to be revised and 3 (6%) of the items need to be discarded. 26 items need to be revised have 18 (23%) distractors which are effective while 60 (77%) distractors are ineffective. The finding of this research shows that the English summative test for the second-year students of SMPN 103 Jakarta in the second semester of the 2018/2019 academic year does not have the characteristics of a good quality test based on the description, the analysis, and the interpretation of the data presented.
