An Item Analysis on The English Summative Test For The Ninth Grade Students of SMP Alkautsar in The First Semester of The 2014/2015 Academic Year

The aim of this study was to find out whether the items of English summative test for the ninth grade students of SMP Alkautsar in the first semester of the 2014/2015 academic year had good quality or not. In finding out the quality of the items, the writer conducted a quantitative analysis and descriptive qualitative method.
The results of data analysis showed that there were 27 difficult items (represent 54% of the test), 18 medium items (represent 36% of the test) and 5 easy items (represent 10% of the test). The discriminating powers showed that there were 21 maintained or accepted items (represent 42% of the test), 7 items should be revised (represent 14% of the test) and the rest 22 items were discarded (represent 44% of the test). The test items had both low level in facility value and discriminating power but good in the effectiveness of the distracter. However, most of the results of data analysis showed that the test had low level, and there should be a correction to the revised items.
Based on the description above from 50 items the writer found only 21items (42%) categorized as accepted. It could be concluded that the English Summative test for the ninth grade students of SMP Alkautsar in the first semester of the 2014/2015 academic year had low quality.
