An Item Analysis of the English Summative Test for the Seventh Grade Students of SMPN 82 Jakarta in the Second Semester of the 2018/2019 Academic Year

The objective of the study were to know whether or not the English summative test for the seventh-grade students of SMPN 82 Jakarta in the second semester of the 2018/2019 academic year has been well-constructed and to identify which ones of the test items are accepted, revised, or rejected. The writer used quantitative descriptive statistics to determine the facility value, the discriminating power, and the effectiveness of distractors. Then, the writer did a qualitative analysis to detect and describe the causes of the weaknesses of the items to revise the bad items. In order to do the study, the writer needed the English summative test of the seventh-grade and students’ answer sheets to analyze the quality of the items. In this study, the sample of this study’s test is the English summative test for the seventh-grade students of SMPN 82 Jakarta in the second semester of the 2018/2019 academic year. The population of this study’s answer sheet is all the seventh-grade students answer sheet. The sample of this study’s answer sheets are students’ answer sheets of 7-1 and 7-2 class. The results of the study showed that based on the facility value calculation there is no item (0%) categorized as very difficult item, 3 items (6%) categorized as difficult items, 13 items (26%) categorized as medium items, 19 items (38%) categorized as easy items and last, there are 15 items (30%) categorized as very easy items. It could be said, that the English summative test does not fulfill the criteria of a good test. Meanwhile, the discriminating power calculation results showed that out of 50 items, there are 4 items (8%) categorized as excellent items, 21 items (42%) categorized as good items, 18 items (36%) categorized as satisfactory items, 6 items (12%) categorized as poor items, and 1 item (2%) categorized as rejected item. It meant there are 43 items accepted, 6 items need to be revised, and 1 item should be rejected. Based on these findings, the writer concluded that the English summative test for seventh-grade students of SMPN 82 Jakarta in the second semester of the 2108/2019 academic year does not fulfill the criteria of a good test. This test could not be used for testing in the future.
