Teaching practicum is a process which is essentials for teacher candidates to apply
the theories and knowledge that have been learned on college. During teaching
practicum, teacher candidates were expected to be able to develop their knowledge as
much as possible in order to become competent teachers including in developing
teaching materials in accordance with the majors of students in vocational schools.
The research aimed to explore the way of teacher candidates’ ability in developing
English teaching materials and investigate the challenges faced during teaching
practicum in vocational school. The research involved seven teacher candidates from
the English education study program of UHAMKA in 2015 academic year who had
implemented a teaching practicum program in two different vocational schools.
Qualitative instrumental case study was applied as the research method with
questionnaires and interviews as the main instruments in collecting the data. The
results of data analysis reveal that there was variety of challenges faced by teacher
candidates in developing English teaching materials that can be mainly categorized
into three types; there are lack of knowledge students’ field, difficulties in developing
teaching materials, and lack of guidance from supervisor teacher
