The objective of the research is to find the empirical evidence whether or not there is a relationship between students‟ motivation and their descriptive writing abilities of the tenth grade students of SMAN 90 Jakarta in the 2015-2016 academic year. The research was started on April, 22th 2016. The population of the research consisted of 232 students. The writer assumed that students‟ English scores are similar. Therefore, the writer chooses the random class of X IPA 3 with 32 students as a sample. In this research, the instruments used for getting the data were questionnaire of students‟ motivation and the form of test for evaluating the students‟ descriptive writing text. The scores were calculated by using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation.
The research findings of the calculation of Pearson Product Moment showed that rtable = 0,349 and robserve = 0,980 in the significance level 0.05. In other words, the correlation analysis proved that ro>rt : 0,980>0,349. It can be concluded that Ho is rejected and Hi is accepted. It means that there is a relationship between students‟ motivation and their abilities of descriptive text on the tenth grade students of SMAN 90 Jakarta in 2015-2016 academic year. To know whether the correlation is significant or not, it can be analyzed by using t- test. The result of this showed that to> tt :27,07>1,70. It can be concluded that there is a relationship between students‟ motivation and their abilities of descriptive text on the tenth grade students of SMAN 90 Jakarta in 2015-2016 academic year.
Hopefully, this research can help the students to solve the writing problems of descriptive text. This research can also help the teachers to give some motivation before explaining the materials. The writer knows that motivation is related to the students‟ abilities of writing descriptive text. Moreover, it also brings the good effects for the school because it will help the students to increase another subject besides writing descriptive text.
