An Errror Analysis of Students' Recount Writing at The Eight Grade of SMPN 246 Jakarta In 2018/2019 Academic Year

The objective of the research is to find out the types and sources of error that
the students mostly made in their recount writings. The research was held at the eighth
grade students of SMPN 246 Jakarta in the 2018/2019 academic year. To accomplish
the objective of the research, 35 students in VIII C were chosen as the sample
respondent of the research.
The instrument of the research is recount writing. The students were asked to
make a recount writing. Then, the writer analyzed the errors that the students made in
their writing according to the types of error. After categorizing their errors, the writer
tabulated them to see the percentage of the errors. Furthermore, the writer interpreted
the data and drew the conclusion and suggestion.
The research shows that the most typical errors are made by the students are
capitalization with 158 or 21,4% errors, verb tense with 155 or 21%, punctuation 114
or 15.4% errors. Moreover, the sources of errors were as follows; carelessness 326 or
44% errors, first language interference 317 or 42% errors, translation 104 or 14%
errors. Carelessness was the most typical sources of errors which influence the error of capitalization to happen. The benefit of the research result is to provide the English teacher with information on the importance of giving remedial programs on the students’ recount writing to improve their writing ability.
