The aim of this research was to find out whether or not the items of
English summative test at the eleventh grade of the first semester at SMAN 90
Jakarta in the 2017/2018 academic year consisted of good items related to the
difficulty level, the discriminating power, and the effectiveness of distractors.
Through item analysis it can be categorized which items should be maintained,
revised, or discarded. If the item was maintained, it could be used in the next test.
If it was revised, it should be revised into a good one. If it was discarded, it should
be deleted and changed by the new item.
The method that was used in this research was quantitative and qualitative
analysis method. Quantitative method is used to find the scores of the difficulty
level, discriminating power, and the effectiveness of distractors. Meanwhile,
qualitative method is used to describe the quality of the test items. The data were
taken from the English summative test and the students answer sheets. The sample
of this research were 68 students. From the findings of the research, the writer
concludes that the English summative test at the eleventh grade of the first
semester on SMAN 90 Jakarta in the 2017/2018 academic year is not good
enough in terms of the facility value and the discriminating power index, as the
data indicated.
The results of difficulty level indicate that there are 2 very difficult items
(5% of the test), 10 difficult items (22% of the test), 33 moderate items (73% of
the test), 0 easy item (0% of the test), 0 very easy item (0% of the test), and 0
discarded item (0% of the test). Meanwhile, the results of discriminating power
indicate that there are 21 poor items (46% of the test), 16 satisfactory items (36%
of the test), 7 good items (16% of the test), 0 excellent item (0% of the test) and 1
bad item (2% of the test). Thus, there are 23 items which can be maintained or
accepted items (51% of the test), 21 items that should be revised (48% of the test)
and the rest 1 item that should be discarded (1% of the test). The writer revised
the 22 items in the test.
