The purpose of this study were to get empirical data if the phonemes of English that do not exist in Thai language become the learning difficulties, especially in pronouncing them by the pupils of the sixth grade of Engress Academy Course, Khoppho, Pattani, Thailand, in 2017/2018 Academic Year. The study was afield survey applying oral reading testing as the technique for collecting the data from 10 pupils as the respondents.
The study has found that the sixth grade pupils have encountered problems in pronouncing English phonemes that are different from Thai’s. In detail, they found it difficult to pronounce consonants /g/, /dʒ/, /v/, /ð/, /ʒ/, /z/, and /ʃ/, vowel / ə / and diphthong /ɔɪ/. It was found 45% of students who cannot pronounce consonant g. For consonant /v/, 60% of students who pronounced consonant /v/ with /w/, and students cannot pronounce consonants /dʒ/ 20% and /ʃ/ 23.3%, they are pronounced /dʒ/ and /ʃ/ with /tʃ/, and for consonants /ð/, /ʒ/, 100% and /z/ 36.6% of students cannot pronounced it, they are pronounced /ð/ with /d/, /ʒ/ and /z/ with /s/. For vowel / ə /, in 100% of students, 87.6 % of students cannot pronounce vowel / ə /, they pronounced vowel / ə / with / a /. And for diphthong /ɔɪ/, 26.6% of students that difficult to pronounce it, there are pronounce this diphthong that / əʊ / instead /ɔɪ/.
