The aim of this study was to know whether or not the reading exercises in a textbook entitled Developing English Competencies for eleventh grade students are parallel with the Communicative Competence by John Munby.
The method applied in this study was a descriptive analysis method on the textbook contents focusing on the reading exercises in the textbook. Moreover, the data were collected into qualitative data because the data are in form of words which is the questions of the reading exercises on the textbook. The object of this study was the reading exercises in the textbook. The analysis of the reading exercises based on communicative competence showed that there were eight out of eight reading sub-skill which was developed in the textbook. The percentage was 100% because all of the reading sub-skills were developed in the textbook, but the proportion of each reading sub-skills provided was not balanced. The understanding explicitly stated information showed 86 times (48.6%), the understanding information when not explicitly stated showed 40 times (22.6%), the understanding conceptual meaning appeared 19 times (10.7%), the understanding the communicative value (function) of sentences and utterances appeared twice (1.1%), the distinguishing the main idea from supporting details showed twice (1.1%), the basic reference skills appeared 15 times (8.5%), the skimming showed once (0.6%), and the scanning to locate specifically required information appeared 12 times (6.8%).
From the findings of the research, the writer has made a conclusion that the reading exercises on the Developing English Competencies’ textbook has been parallel with the communicative approach, especially with the reading sub-skills.
