The objective of this research were to find out the quality of the English
summative test for the seventh grade students of SMPN 2 Cikarang Timur in the
second semester of the 2017/2018 academic year in terms of the facility value,
discriminating power and the effectiveness of distracters. The method of this
research was quantitative and qualitative analysis method. Quantitative method
was used to count data of the difficulty level and discriminating power, and the
effectiveness of distracter. Meanwhile, qualitative method was used to analyze
farther about the quality of the test and the alternative revision of the test.
The number of population was 214 students from 7 classes. However, the
writer only took 2 classes as samples consisting of 61 students (30 students from
7H and 31 the other students are from 7I). Those 61 students’ answer sheets were
divided into two groups; 27% upper group and 27% lower group.
The writer used the formula suggested by Heaton to analyze the facility
value and discriminating power. It was found out from 30 multiple choice items
that 16 items are maintained, 12 items are revised, and 2 items are rejected. Based
on the result of facility value, there are 17% of easy level items, 53% of medium
level items, and 30% of difficult level items. However, from the discriminating
power, there are 33% of good items, 27% of satisfactory items, 33% of poor
items, and 7% of rejected items. Furthermore, from the effectiveness of distracters
is 26% of excellent distracters, 29% of good distracters, 30% of moderate
distracters, 12% of poor distracters and the last are 3% of rejected distracters. In
short, the test is not good in term of difficulty level, discriminating power, and the
effectiveness of distracter.
