This research was held at the tenth-grade students of SMAN 5 South Tangerang.
The objectives of the research were to find out the types and sources of errors
made by the students in their descriptive writings. The error collected was
classified based on Betty Azar‟s theory and Brown‟s theory. The method used in
this study was qualitative. The qualitative designed applied was a writing task.
Furthermore, the subject of this study was the tenth-grade students of MIA 4. The
samples of this study were 32 students. The data was collected through writing
task. The result of the error analysis process showed that students committed
errors into fourteen types: Capitalization (18.28%), Punctuation (14.80%),
Word Choice (14.68%), Verb Tense (10.94%), Add a Word (10.07%), Spelling
(7.21%), Article (6.46%), Singular-Plural (6.34%), Omit a Word (5.97%),
Word Form (1.61%), Word Order (1.49%), Meaning not Clear (1.12%), Run
on Sentence (1.12%), and Incomplete Sentence (0.25%). In addition, the most
typical sources of errors, from the highest to the lowest were Intralingual
transfer (67.97%), Interlingual transfer (30.15%), and Communication
Strategies (1.80%).
