An Item Analysis of the English Summative Test for the Ninth Grade Students of SMPN 5 Bekasi in the 2017/2018 Academic Year

The objective of this study to find out the empirical evidence of whether or not the
Test items for the ninth grade students’ of SMPN 5 Bekasih as good quality or not and whether or not can be categorized as agood test based on the difficulty level, the discriminating power and the effectiveness of distractors.
The English summative test was held on December, 2nd 2017, at SMPN 5 Bekasi
which is located in Jl. Raya Seroja No. 45 Bekasi Utara. The test of this study consist of 40 multiple choice items. The respondents of the study were the third grade students of SMPN 5 Bekasi in the 2017/2018 academic year. The total number of the student were 358 students. The writer took two classes which consist of 80 students. The writer took out 27% (22 students) who got the highest score for the upper group, and 27% (22 students) who get The lowest score for the lower group. Then the writer used the formula suggested by J. B Heaton to calculates the ID and DP formula of each item.
The finding of this analysis shows that from 40 items. There have no been easy items (0%), 32 medium items (80%), and 8 difficult items (20%) which are categorized in the difficulty level. In the tabulation of discriminating power, its howed that there are 13 items or 32% from multiple choice that shoul be revised. There fore, it was stated that English Summative test for the ninth grade students in the first semester of 2017/2018 has not fulfilled the criteria of a good test quality in term of difficulty level and discriminating power.
