An item analysis on the English summative test for the second semester of the seventh grade students at SMPN 157 Jakarta on the 2017/2018 academic year

summative test for the second semester of the seventh grade students at SMPN
157 Jakarta on the 2017/2018 academic year. The Study Programme of English

The aim of this study was to find out whether or not the items of English
summative test for the seventh grade students of the second semester at SMP 157
Jakarta in the 2017/2018 Academic Year had good quality. In finding out the
quality of the items, the writer has conducted a quantitative analysis and
descriptive qualitative method.
The results of data analysis showed that there have been 6 difficult items
(represent 12% of the test), 8 medium items (represent 17% of the test) and 34
easy items (represent 71% of the test). The discriminating power showed that
there have been 19 maintained or accepted items (represent 39% of the test), 20
items should be revised (represent 42% of the test) and the rest 9 items were
discarded (represent 19% of the test). The results of data analysis on the
distracters of the weak items in discriminating power showed that there have been
4 effective distracters (represent 7% of the good items) and the rest 56
ineffective distracters (represent 93% of the poor items). The test items had low
level in facility value, discriminating power and the effectiveness of the distracter.
However, most of the results of data analysis showed that the test had low level,
and there should be a correction to the revised items.
Based on the description above that from 50 items the writer found only
19 items (39%) categorized accepted. It can be concluded that the English
summative test for the second semester of seventh grade students at SMP 157
Jakarta on the 2017/2018 Academic Year had low quality. The benefits of this
research are can help the teacher to find out the quality of good test in terms of
difficulty level, discriminating power and the effectiveness of distracter for make
a good test.
