The objective of this study was to describe and to identify the students‘ errors made by eighth grade students of SMPN 263 Jakarta in their descriptive text writing. The type of this study was descriptive qualitative and quantitative study. The study methodologies were: Collection the data, identification of errors (labelling with varying degree of precision depending on the linguistic sophistication brought to bear upon the task and the respect of the exact nature of the deviation), classification into error types, statement of relative frequency of error types, identification of the areas of difficulty in the target language, and therapy (remedial drills, lessons, etc.) In analyzing the data, the writer used Azar‘s formula for the types of errors and Brown‘s theory for the sources of errors. The result of the study showed that the eighth grade students of SMPN 263 Jakarta made 628 errors for their writing. The writer found that the common types of errors for the eighth grade students of SMPN 263 Jakarta in their descriptive text writing were Capitalization (25.16%), Add a Word (17.83%), Word Choice (9.71%), Punctuation (9.39%), Omit a Word(9.24%), Spelling (7.01%), Word Form (6.85%), Word Order (5.25%), Verb Tense (4.78%), Singular – plural (2.23%), Meaning not clear (1.43%), Incomplete Sentence (0.64%), Article (0.32%), and Run on Sentence (0.16%). Moreover, the sources of errors were found Interlingual Transfer (35.99%), Intralingual Transfer (26.27%), Context of Learning (25.80%), and Communication Strategy (11.94%). Therefore, the eighth grade students of SMPN 263 Jakarta especially in class B still made errors in their descriptive text writing.
