An Item Analysis of the English Summative Test for the Tenth Grade Students of SMAN 98 Jakarta in the first Semester of the 2016/2017 Academic Year

The purpose of this study is to answer the question of the study whether or not the English summative test at SMAN 98 JAKARTA in the 2016/2017 Academic Year has good quality of the test in terms of difficulty level, discriminating power, and effectiveness of distracters. So it can be categorized which item should be maintained, revised and discarded. If the item was maintained, it could be used in the future test. If it was revised, it should be revised into a good one, so the item can be used in the future test. If the test was discarded, it should be thrown away and changed by a new item.
The method that was used in this research was descriptive quantitative method. It means to describe the items which have been analyzed by using difficulty level and discriminating power aspects. The data have been taken from the students answer sheets of English summative test. The respondent of the study were 70 students. The analysis of the difficulty level showed, there were 36 items (72%) categorized as easy items, 11 items (22%) which categorized as medium items, and 3 items (6%) which were categorized as difficult items. The analysis of discriminating power showed that there were 32 items 64%) were maintained, and 18 items (36%) need to be revised. The analysis of the effectiveness of the distracters showed that there were 151 dsitracters (75%) are ineffective and 49 distracters (25%) are effective. Based on the analysis of the difficulty level and discriminaitng power, can be conclude that the test items’ belong to bad quality test items.
From the finding of the research the writer concludes that the English summative test of the tenth grade students of SMAN 98 Jakarta in the first semester of the 2016/2017 academic year has bad quality of test item in terms of facility value, discriminating power and the effectiveness of the distracters.
