An Item Analysis of the English Summative Test for the Ninth Grade Students of SMPN 176 West Jakarta on the Second Semester in the 2016/2017 Academic Year

The objective of this study was to find out out whether the English summative test items for the ninth grade students of SMP N 176 West Jakarta has good quality or not in terms of the facility value or difficulty level, discriminating power, and the effectiveness of distractor. The test was held in SMPN 176 West Jakarta on June 2017.
The test of this study consist of 50 multiple choice items. The respondents of this research are 44 students which are divided into 27% (12 students) of upper group, 46% (20 students) of medium group and 27% (12 students) of lower group. In this matter the writer does not use the medium group, which is about 46% because the item analysis only needs the upper group and lower group as a sample analysis. In analyzing the difficulty level and discriminating power, the writer used the formula suggested by J.B Heaton to analyze the difficulty level and discriminating power.
The result of the data analysis showed that from 50 items. There have been 22 items which are categorized in the easy level, 25 items which are categorized in the medium level, and 3 items which are categorized in the difficulty level. In terms of discriminating power, it is discovered from 50 items, there have been 37 items can be accepted, 9 items must be revised, and 4 items are discarded. Based on the result of the difficulty level and discriminating power, it can be concluded that the test have not fulfilled the criteria of a good quality. The benefits of the study result are can help teacher to find out if the test can be categorized as a good test in terms of difficulty level, the discriminating power of the test items and the effectiveness of distractor for make a good test of English Summative test for the second semester of Ninth Grade student at SMPN 176 West Jakarta. And that is useful for making good quality of English test item for the next Summative Test.
