An Item Analysis of the English Summative Test for the First Semester Students of the Eight Grade at MTs Negeri 36 Jakarta in 2016/2017 Academic Year

The objective of this research was to find out the English summative testin the first semester for the eight grade students of MTs Negeri 36 Jakarta in 2016/2017 academic year has the quality of a good test in the term of difficulty level, discriminating power, and the effectiveness of distractor. The English summative test was administered on July 22, 2016.The method of this research was descriptive quantitative and qualitative analysis. The instruments are English summative test, asnwer key, and the students’ answer sheets that the writer used in this research.
From the result of the item analysis in the term of difficulty level, the writer got the data that the English summative test was good enough, they were: 10 easy items (22%), 27 medium items (60%), and 8 difficult items (18%). In the tabulation of discriminating power, the writer got the data that there were 10 items(23%) that did not have good quality, they were: 3 very poor items (7%), needed to be rejected, 7 poor items (16%) need revision. However, the quality of 35 items (78%), they were (20 satisfactory items, 14 good items,and 1 excellentitem) are good because the test items can be accepted. In the tabulation of the effectiveness of answer key, the writer got the data that there were 29 effective answer keys (65%), 14 less effective answer keys (31%), and 2 ineffective answer keys (4%)In the tabulation of the effectiveness of distractor, the writer got the data that there were 89 effective distractors (66%), 36 less effective distractors (27%), and 10 ineffective distractors (7%).
Based on the research finding, the writer concluded that the English summative test for the first semester students of the eight grade at MTs Negeri 36 Jakarta in 2016/2017 academic year in general has good quality of the test in the terms of the difficulty level, the discriminating power, and the effectiveness of distractor. The benefit of the research result is the teacher has known which items are accepted, revised, and rejected before administering the test to the students.
