The objective of the study is to answer the question of the study
whether or not the English summative test at SMAN 5 Tambun Selatan
2016/2017 academic year has good quality of the test in terms of difficulty,
discriminating power, and effectiveness of distracters . The method was used
as numeric method to get the measures of the difficulty level, discriminating
power, and the effectiveness of option included; the effectiveness of answer key
and the effectiveness of distracters. The study used quantitative and qualitative
method. Quantitative is analysis is used to find the data of difficulty level, the
discriminating power, and the effectiveness of option. While qualitative
analysis is used to describe the quality and the weakness of the item.
The population respondent of the research is the tenth grade students of
SMAN 5 Tambun Selatan that consists of 210 students divided in 6 classes.
The writer used 30% from population respondent to get the sample respondent.
The sample of the respondent of this research is 63 students from IPA I, IPA II,
IPA III, and IPS I, IPAS II, IPS III. The writer used simple random sampling.
The data have been taken from the students answer sheet from upper
group 27% and the lower group 27%. The result of the test item based on the
difficulty level : there are 10% items that are categorized as difficult items, 70%
that are categorized as medium items, and 20% that are categorized as easy
items. Besides the difficulty level, based on the discriminating power : 29 items
or 83% that can be accepted and 6 items or 17% should be revised. Based on
the effectiveness of answer key, there are 31 answer keys (89%) that are
categorized as effective, and 4 answer keys (11%) that are categorized as less
effective. After the effectiviness of answer key next is the effectiveness of
distracters, there are 105 distracters or (43%) that are categorized as effective
distracters to be the highest portion.
The writer concludes that the English summative test for the tenth grade
and could be classified as good quality items.
