An Error Analysis on Descriptive Writings of the Tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri 7 Bekasi in The 2016/2017 Academic Year

The research was aimed to know the types of grammatical error and the sources of error which were made by the students in descriptive writing. The research was started on April 3rd 2017 and finished on April17th 2017. The subject of the research was the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Bekasi in the 2017/2018 Academic Year. The participant consists of 31 students. The research method was descriptive analytical method. The writer asked the students to compose a descriptive writing in the writing task that had been given. The writer also gave the title of the descriptive, namely “My Close Friend”. To know whether or not it is an error, the writer gave the writing task twice. For the first meeting, the students were asked to make a descriptive writing based on the instruction that had been given in the writing task. For the second meeting, the students were asked to correct the words that had been underlined by the writer. Then, the writer analyzed the errors from the second data based on Azar‟, Alice and Hogue theory and the sources based on Brown‟s theory.
The result of the research showed that the typical errors made by the students in the students‟ writing, based on Azhar, are in verb tense as many as 66 or 21.10%, and the lowest is in word form, word choice, incomplete sentence, and run-on sentence as many as 0%, and based on Alice and Hogue with the highest error is in wrong word as many as 29 or 15.20% and the lowest error is in connecting to make one sentence and conjunction as many as 0% Besides, based on the source error, the highest error in interlingual transfer 61% and the lowest is in intralingual transfer 38%.
Based on the result, the writer concluded that the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Bekasi have made errors in some area which are in verb tense, capitalization, add a word, punctuation, spelling, and wrong word. As a matter of facts, it is necessary for them to have more practice in the area of English gramatical pattern and more exercise about how to put appropriate word correctly.
