The objective of this research was to find the empirical evidence of the
quality of the English summative test items for the eighth grade students of SMP
Buddhis Silaparamita Jakarta in the first semester of the 2016/2017 academic
years.
The method of this research was a descriptive quantitative and qualitative
analysis. They described the quality of the test items based on the discriminating
power, facility value and effectiveness of the distracters of the items. The
populations of the research were the eight grade students of SMP Buddhis
Silaparamita Jakarta. There was only one class which consisted of 21 students.
The sample of this research was divided into two groups. 5 Students from the
upper and 5 students from the lower.
Based on the analysis, this research revealed that the English summative
test for the eighth grade students of SMP Buddhis Silaparamita Jakarta is good
because the there were 31 items (62%) that could be accepted and only 4 (8%)
items need to be rejected. The writer has suggestions for the test makers that they
should know the students’ ability before composing the test, they have to predict
how far the students can do the test, the distracters should attract the upper and
lower students, and also the distracters must be coherence with the test items.
