An Error Analysis of Students’ Report Text Writing of the Eleventh Grade MAN 4 Jakarta in the 2016- 2017 Academic Year

This research was conducted at MAN 4 Jakarta. The objective of this
research is to find the most common errors and sources of error that students of
eleventh grade on MAN 4 Jakarta made in report writing text. The participants of
this study were 25 students in class XI IPS 1. The writer asked the students to
write a report text about one of animals were provided namely tiger, owl, wolf,
snake, elephant, green turtle, panda and lion. To distinguish between error and
mistake, the writer took the data twice in two meetings. The first meeting was
used to find the students’ mistakes and the second one was used for students to
corect their mistakes that had been pointed out. After the students submitted
writing task that were corrected, the writer analyzed types of error by using Azar’s
theory and sources of error by using Richard and Fisiak’s theory.
The writer found that the types of error at MAN 4 Jakarta in their writings
are word form (17%), punctuation (14.33%), capitalization (13.33%), word choice
(9.67%), omit word (7.33%), add a word (7.33%), spelling (7%), singular-plural
(5.33%), verb tense (4.67%), meaning not clear (4.67%), run on sentence (4.67%),
article (4%), word order (0.67%), and incomplete sentence (0%). Meanwhile, the
percentage of the sources of error is as follow: incomplete application of rules
(33.11%), interlingual error (24.51%), over generalization (15.89%), ignorance of
rule restrictions (15.23%) and false concept hypothesized (11.26%).
