A paper, the English Language Teaching Program, the Department of Language and Arts Education, the school of teaching and Education, the University of Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. HAMKA, Jakarta 2015. The objective of this research is to find out whether or not the English Summative test for the first semester students of eight grade of SMPN 278 Jakarta Barat can be categorized as a good test based on difficulty level and the discriminating power. The research was conducted at SMPN 278 Jakarta Barat, on October. The test of this research consist of 45 multiple choice items. The respondents of this research are 70 students which are divided into 28% of upper, 46% medium and 27% of lower group. in this matter, the writer does not use the medium group, which is about 46% because the item analysis needs only the upper group and the lower group as a sample analysis. In analyzing the difficulty level and discriminating power, and the effectiveness of option, the writer used the formula suggested by Heaton to analyze the difficulty level, the discriminating power and the effectiveness of option. After analyzing the difficulty level, there have been 1 item which is categorized in the difficult level, 39 items which are categorized in the medium level, and 10 items which are categorized in the easy level. Discriminating power, it is discovered from 45 multiple choice items, there have been 7 items can be rejected, 16 items should be revised and 30 items are accepted. Based on the results of the difficulty level, discriminating power and the effectiveness of option, it can be concluded that the test fulfills the criteria of a good test. Principally, this analysis has two significances to give new ideas to the reader to construct good test.
