The objective of the research is to find an empirical evidence of whether
or not there is relationship between the learning motivation and the ability of the
eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Kota Tangerang Selatan to use
vocabulary in the 2017-2018 academic years. The method of the research is fieldsurvey
method with correlation technique in which the writer presents quantitative
evidence of the relationship between the two variables. The instrument of the
research is learning motivation questionnaire and the vocabulary test. The writer
distributed the instruments to all the eleventh grade students and used random
cluster sampling technique in taking the sample. The sample of the research was
the students of class XI IPS-4.
After calculating the data, the writer concludes that there is relationship
between the learning motivation and the ability of eleventh grade students of
SMA Negeri 4 Kota Tangerang Selatan to use vocabulary. The result of the
research is ro = 0,72 is higher than rt = 0,325. As ro > rt, it can be said that Ho is
rejected and Hi is accepted. So there is relationship between the two variables.
Practically, through this research, the writer hopes that it will be useful
for those who concern with English teaching, especially in learning motivation
and vocabulary ability and broaden the perspective of English teaching and the
readers in general.
