This research is attempted to discover the relationship between the Students’ motivation (independent variable) and Students’ reading skill (dependent variable). The tested hypothesis is whether there is a significant relationship between students’ motivation and students’ reading skill. The research was started on April, 06th 2016. The population of the research were the seventh grade into seven classes, the research just take one class randomly. As sample of this research that is 7D which consists of 34 students. The writer took the data by means of test instrument and did a research with survey method. The instruments of this research are motivation questionnaire and reading test. The writer used Pearson Product Moment’s Formula to calculate the correlation between X variable and Y variable.
The result of the analysis showed that data of the two variables have normal distribution using Chi-square test. The result of normality of the data distribution (X variable) χ2o=1.87 is smaller than χ2t= 7.81. The result of normality of the data distribution (Y variable) χ2o= 5.22 is smaller than χ2t = 7.81. It can be concluded that sample come from the population which are normally distributed. In the scattered diagram, the data scores are making close to the straight line which means that the data are linear.
From the data analysis, it is known the result of r-observed (ro) = 0.97 is higher than r-table (rt) = 0.34. As (rt ˂ ro), it can be said that Ho is rejected and Hi is accepted. It means that there is relationship between students’ motivation and students’ reading skill. To know whether how far the relationship between X variable and Y variable are, the writer used t-test formula. From the t-test, it is known the result of t-observed (to) = 9.41 is higher than t-table (tt) = 1.70. Because (to>tt), it can be said that Ho is rejected and Hi is accepted. So, there is significant relationship between students’ motivation and students’ reading skill on the seventh grade students at SMPN 174 Jakarta. Practically through this research, the writer hopes that the paper will be useful for those who concern with English teaching especially in reading skill. It can become input for all English teachers, to develop better ways of English teaching program.
