The aim of this research is to get the empirical evidence of the relationship between vocabulary mastery and descriptive reading skill at the eight grade of SMPN 1 Balaraja Tangerang. The sample of the research are 70 students which were taken randomly of 7 classes. The research consisted of two variables. The first variable was vocabulary mastery test, and the second variable was descriptive reading skill.
The writer used the Pearson’s Product Moment analysis in order to get the correlation between both variables. The result of the research shows that students’vocabulary mastery got average score 71,6 and students’ descriptive reading skill got average score 68,5. The result of the correlation analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between vocabulary mastery and descriptive reading skill at the eight grade of SMPN 1 Balaraja Tangerang. Pearson’s Product Moment analysis showed robserved is higher than rtable (0,364 > 0.235). It means that null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Hi) is accepted.
Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between vocabulary mastery and descriptive reading skill at the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Balaraja Tangerang.
