An Error Analysis of the Students‟ Descriptive Writing of the Tenth Grade of SMA Nurul Falah Jakarta in the 2016/2017 Academic Year

This study has some objectives, namely: to get information of the typical errors of the students‟ descriptive writing, to get information about the sources of the typical errors. This study was conducted at SMA Nurul Falah, North Jakarta. The samples of this study were 18 students of X IPS 1 and 18 students of X IPS 2. The writer collected the data by assigning the students to write a topic, namely “My Close Friend”. The writer took the data two times to differentiate the mistakes and errors. In analyzing the students‟ error, the writer used Azar‟s grammatical error classification and the sources of error that given by Norrish.
After doing some procedures in this study, the writer got the data of the study. The results of this study show that the most typical errors that the students of X IPS 1 and X IPS 2 made were Word Choice with 16.9%, Omit A Word with 13.3%, Punctuation with 12.9%, Add A Word and Meaning Not Clear with 10.6%. The highest sources of error that the students of X IPS 1 and X IPS 2 made was Translation with 38.1%.
After doing this study, the writer summarized that the teachers of the tenth grade students of SMA Nurul Falah should give more explanation and exercise about grammar, especially in Word Choice, Omit A Word, and Punctuation. There are some benefits of this study. The benefits are to give information about the most typical errors and the sources of error that are made by the students of the tenth grade of SMA Nurul Falah Jakarta and to find an approprite remedial teaching in order to reduce the students‟ error.
