The objective of the study was to find the most typical error made by the
tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Tajurhalang in descriptive writing. This
research was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Tajurhalang in the 2016/2017 academic
year. The writer took 30 students as the sample in this research. In collecting the
data, the writer used a descriptive writing task with the topic “My Best Friend”.
The method that the writer used was descriptive analytical method which
described the data based on the discovery. From the calculation, the writer
concluded that the most typical error in the students‟ writing were word choice
area with 88 (19.68%), capitalization 62 (13.87%), omit a word 47(10.51%), add a
word 43 (9.61%), singular-plural 35 (7.83%), article 35 (7.83%), spelling 25
(5.59%), word form 22 (4.92%), verb tense 21 (4.69%), punctuation 18 (4.02%),
word order 17 (3.80%), incomplete sentence 16 (3.57%), run-on sentence 11
(2.46%) and meaning not clear 7 (1.56%). Besides that, the most typical sources
of error were in the intralingual transfer area with 202 (45.19%), context of
learning 151 (33.78%), interlingual transfer 60 (13.42%), and communication
strategies 34 (7.60%). The result of the study indicated that some students needed
more treatment and remedial teaching from the teacher toward their errors in
writing.
