This research is attempted to discover the relationship between the independent variable (X) and dependent variable (Y). The hypothesis tested is whether or not there is a significant relationship between students’ motivation and their ability in writing descriptive text, and it was conducted in October on the eighth grade students at SMPN 277 Jakarta. The instruments are motivation questionnaire and writing test. In calculating the correlation between Students’ Motivation and Their Writing Ability, the writer used Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The result of analysis shows, data of two variables have normal distribution by using Chi Square (χ2) test. The result of normality of the data distribution (X variable) χ2h = 5.70 is smaller than χ2t = 7.81. The result of normality of the data distributtion (Y variable) χ2h = 6.70 is smaller than χ2t = 7.81. In scattered graph, it can be seen that the score has formed straight line, and it is linier. From the data analysis, it is known that the result of r-observed (ro) = 0.932 is bigger than r-table (rt)= 0.325. As ro> rt, it can be said that Ho is rejected, and Hi is accepted. From the t-test, it is known the result of t-observed (to) = 6.21 is bigger than t-table (tt) = 1.70. Therefore, there is a significant relationship between students’ motivation and their ability in writing descriptive text on the eighth grade students at SMPN 277 Jakarta.
